Mentoring Is …
Exactly the kind of help a newcomer needs to settle in Canada
Who Am I?
When I came to Canada, I had help getting settled through the university I attended.
I mentored with CRIEC because I know first-hand, how important that first connection and support is for newcomers.
My name is Rahul Swarnkar, and I am a Project Engineer.
I came to Canada from India in 2006 to do my Masters at the University of British Columbia and through an on-campus hiring there, I landed my first job that brought me further east to Alberta.
My First Job
The engineering profession in Canada is regulated by provincial bodies which is a different setup from India. So attending a Canadian University gave me the advantage I needed to kick start my career. My first job gave me excellent experiences at Christina Lake Regional Project and Kearl Initial Development sites during their construction phase. This field work early on in my career gave me a great perspective on how typical Mega Projects are built in the Alberta’s Oil patch. In this job, I would fly in/out on rotational shift schedules of weeks at a time. Later on, I moved to a Calgary based job with WorleyParsons which I got with the help of strong recommendations from old colleagues I worked with at Christina Lake Project. This new job got me away from Construction and made me focus more on Engineering Design Management. Also, my personal and social life stopped taking a toll!
Since then I have moved through different roles within the spectrums of Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM), but it was that first job and the network I made that helped my career take off.
Me and CRIEC
I learned about CRIEC through my wife who attended Deloitte’s Day of Caring session. When I learned about their mission and vision, I was intrigued and felt the need to contribute. My primary thought was to help internationally trained Engineers avoid the common pit-falls and get them to their right job as soon as possible.
Mentoring is exactly the kind of help a newcomer needs to help settle in Canada and build a professional network in their respective fields. CRIEC’s programs and their partnerships with various organizations is a commendable positive step in that direction!
