Spectra Energy believes in giving back to the communities where we live and work. Helping Hands in Action (HHIA) is Spectra Energy’s hallmark annual volunteer initiative, where employees participate in various volunteering opportunities across Canada and the US.

Spectra Energy’s Environmental Specialist Ricardo Moreno enjoyed being a mentor, stating that “Mentors have shaped my own professional and personal life in so many positive ways, that I try to help and give back every time I can. From my point of view, mentoring is a powerful human relationship that facilitates sharing valuable experiences, lessons learned and gives both mentors and mentees the opportunity to grow. It is very rewarding and makes you really humble. “

Bim Asala, Contract Specialist at Spectra Energy, adds “I definitely enjoyed mentoring my two mentees at the Spectra helping hand event. It was a pleasure to impact my knowledge of Supply Chain role within the Canadian work environment to them. It was especially important to me to give back to these new immigrants having been in that same situation before. Knowing the challenges you face as a new immigrant professional trying to gain the all-important “Canadian experience” in order to land a job in the industry can be really daunting. I am in touch with my mentees and will continue to help as best as I can to help them achieve their professional goals.”

“Not only does the mentoring exchange allow our employees to give back to the community, but it also strengthens our employees’ communication, cross-cultural and leadership skills, all critical competencies we look for in our employees in order to foster an engaged, productive and inclusive workplace”, adds Anne-Marie Pham, the project HHIA champion and Manager of Diversity and Employment Equity at Spectra Energy.

Spectra Energy, partnering with us and Bow Valley College to host an energizing mentoring session to support internationally trained professionals. Spectra Energy employees volunteered for the event and mentored 20 new Canadians with diverse professional backgrounds including human resources, engineering, supply chain, law, environmental science, finance and accounting, and business analysis. Thank you Spectra Energy for your time and commitment.
