Charles Osuji is one of the CEO & Managing Partner of Osuji & Smith Lawyers and sits on CRIEC’s Board of Directors. Osuji has been chosen as one of Calgary’s Top 40 Under 40, and was one of the Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers of 2020, — He credits his success, in part, to his mentors along the way.
“You can’t go far without strong support, if you want to travel far, you need to travel with people who support your vision,” says Osuji about his success. “I’ve been a beneficiary of that, CRIEC has supported me, the former Executive Director, Bruce Randal, guided me and lead me. Mentorship has been a critical part of my success.”
Osuji says that finding success as a newcomer in Canada is about consistency. Internationally trained professionals might feel frustrated if they can’t secure a job immediately, but staying positive and continuing to reach out, learn and “having someone who has been here, and be humble enough to take their advice,” are all important, according to Osuji.
Osuji decided to stay in Canada permanently in 2011. He says having family here in Canada, coupled with the idea of a better life and better professional opportunities informed his decision.
“I run a firm of 23 lawyers now, with 10 support staff, but big picture, I’m looking to make a national firm out of Osuji & Smith,” says Osuji when asked about his professional goals.
Osuji said one of his strategies in coming to Canada was “to connect with my roots and branch out from there.”
“At the end of the day, the secret is consistency. You have to show up and be consistent. Give back and make sure that people are successful because of you. The more people you help, the more truly successful you are.”
